Zia-ul-Ummah, Hazrat Allama Peer Muhammad Karam Shah Azhari writes:
‘This is a reference to the pre-Islamic Arabian custom whereby a husband could divorce his wife by simply declaring, ‘Anti ‘alaiya ka-zahri ummi’ – ‘You are (as unlawful to) me to as my mother’s back.’ This statement would break the Nikah and the divorce was irrevocable (non-reconcilable) and the woman would forever be unlawful for him. This act is known as Zihar.
